ThumaPay is preparing for launch. Licence applications are in progress with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe and IPEC. We hold no customer funds and offer no regulated service until authorised. Read our regulatory status.
ThumaShield

Cover that is already in the booking.

Insurance fails people when it is a separate purchase, a separate app and a separate argument. ThumaShield attaches cover at the moment a parcel is booked or a trip starts, priced per consignment, and claimed in the same place.

How claims work
Priced per consignmentUnderwritten by registered insurersClaims in-app
Cover at booking — illustrativeExample
Delivery fee$3.50
Goods-in-transit cover$0.25
Declared value insured$120.00
Total at booking$3.75

The premium is its own line at booking, never folded into the delivery price. You always know what the cover cost and what it covers.

ThumaPay acts as an insurance agent and distributor. Policies are underwritten by insurers registered with the Insurance and Pensions Commission, and your policy is with the underwriter. We handle distribution, the customer experience and claims facilitation — we do not carry the risk ourselves.
Cover

What can be insured

Goods in transit

Per-parcel or per-consignment cover against loss and damage, attached at booking with the declared value set by the sender.

Driver accident

Personal accident and health cover for drivers and couriers working on the platform, priced per period of activity.

Vehicle cover

Comprehensive and third-party motor cover for owner-drivers and fleets, arranged through registered underwriters.

Parametric cover

Payouts triggered by a defined event rather than an assessment — faster settlement where the trigger is objective and measurable.

Fleet policies

Cover across a whole fleet with per-vehicle visibility, so an operator is not managing a dozen separate renewals.

Embedded for partners

Other platforms can attach cover to their own bookings through the API, with the premium itemised in their checkout.

Claims

The part that usually goes wrong

Most complaints about insurance are not about the premium — they are about what happens at claim time. The booking record already holds most of what an assessor needs, so we use it.

01

Claim in the app

Open the delivery or trip and claim against it. Consignment details, declared value, route and timestamps are already attached — you are not re-typing what we already know.

02

Automated first assessment

Straightforward claims within defined limits are assessed against booking data automatically, which is what makes a same-day answer possible.

03

Referred where it needs a human

Larger or contested claims go to the underwriter's assessor. You are told it has been referred, and why, rather than watching a status bar.

04

Settled to your wallet

Approved claims pay into your ThumaPay wallet, so the money is usable immediately rather than waiting on a cheque or bank transfer.

How we talk about cover

No fear, no small print games

What we commit to

State the premium as its own line. Say plainly what is covered and what is excluded, before purchase. Show the declared value being insured. Name the underwriter. Give claim decisions with reasons.

What we avoid

Fear-based selling. Jargon that obscures an exclusion. Bundling cover into a price so you cannot see it. Auto-renewing something you did not knowingly buy. Claiming to underwrite when we distribute.

Where we stand

ThumaShield and licensing

Insurance distribution requires registration with IPEC as an insurance agent, plus an underwriting partner for each product. Both are in progress.

Questions

About cover and claims

A registered insurer underwrites the policy. ThumaPay distributes it as an agent and handles the experience around it. The underwriter is named in your policy documents before you buy.
The intention is that goods-in-transit cover attaches by default at booking, with the premium shown as a separate line and the declared value set by the sender. You will always see it before confirming.
Exclusions are stated in plain language before purchase rather than buried. Typical exclusions include items prohibited from carriage, undeclared value above the insured amount, and damage from inherent defect. The policy wording governs.
Straightforward claims assessed automatically against booking data are designed to settle same-day into your wallet. Larger or contested claims go to the underwriter's assessor and take longer — we tell you which path yours is on.
After IPEC registration is granted and underwriting partnerships are finalised. Register interest and we will tell you when cover goes live.
